Community Gardens Harvest Feast
On September 15, 2010, we had our first annual Harvest Feast, co-hosted by the Growing Community Gardens and the PG Public Interest Research Group Sustainability Gardens. The event was a celebration of the amazing community building that had taken place in the first year of the project. About 230 students, local residents and business people, and church members joined the celebration during the evening, which combined an all-local food menu, music by local musicians, some jigging by local Metis youth, some final harvesting and cleaning of the gardens, a trial run of our newly renovated firepit, and some joyful mingling among the participants. During the evening, I repeatedly watched people from different community “cultures” mingling and talking together. The evening was beyond any expectations that we had imagined for this first event, and it strengthened our belief in the power of community building among people from very different backgrounds.
