Who Am I?

I’m a terrestrial ecologist and an Associate Professor at the University of Northern British Columbia.  My research interests include forest ecosystem responses to environmental variation, particularly climate change.  Over the last five years, my research has focused primarily on sub-Arctic and Arctic environments.  An emerging area of interest is the intersection of science and culture:  the development of relevant research questions, the translation of science into local cultural contexts, and understanding how science and technology have shaped and been shaped by society.  Most recently, I am engaging issues related to food security and local sustainability.  I’m a believer in promoting change from the grassroots by building community and interdependence across diverse sectors of local “culture” – a very ecological principle.

I teach an undergraduate forest-management course (Silviculture), applied ecology courses for undergraduate and graduate students (Plant Ecology, Silvics and Forest Biology), and courses examining interactions between society and the environment for undergraduate and graduate students (Human Ecology and Global Change).

In my website, I've tried to describe my academic journey and the evolution of my perspectives and research goals.  I hope that you find it interesting and insightful.

Peace
